Maninder Singh

Visiting Coach

Maninder Singh, a left-arm spinner with huge talent, represented India in his first Test at 17 years old against Pakistan at Karachi in 1982. Throughout his career, he appeared for India in 35 Test and 59 One Day Internationals.

Equipped with variety, flight, and turn, Maninder was once described as India's next generation of legendary spinners' heir, with the whole country waiting for his turn to re-write the record books. He experimented with his match-winning image in the 1986 tour of England and followed it up with incredulous shows against Sri Lanka and Pakistan at home.

The peak of his career was the 1986–87 season. He yielded two fine 7-wicket performances—one against Sri Lanka at Nagpur and a career best 7 for 27 against Pakistan in Bangalore.

While returning to the national team, he had an acceptable show in a Test match against Zimbabwe in Delhi, yielding 3 for 79 and 4 for 66. But this game turned out to be his last one for India.

Maninder ended his Test career with 88 wickets at a mean of 37.36. He took 66 wickets in ODIs, his best being 4 for 22. Maninder Singh today makes regular visits to Dronacharya Cricket Academy nets, imparting his wealth of experience and shrewd insight to the next generation of spinners, dispensing valuable tips and motivation to young trainees.
